The Taste Gap: Why AI Makes Discernment the New Superpower
I am sitting with an AI system that can produce ten essays before I finish my coffee.
That still feels strange, even after using these systems every day. A few years ago, writing meant confronting the blank page with your own raw attention. Now I can ask an agent for angles, outlines, counterarguments, headlines, edits, social posts, and even a publishing plan. It will not get tired. It will not complain. It will keep generating.
And then the real work begins.
Not writing. Choosing.
Which idea deserves to exist? Which sentence carries weight? Which argument is alive, and which one only sounds intelligent? Which version is mine? Which one should I refuse to publish, even though the machine made it easy?
That is the moment AI reveals the new human bottleneck.
For most of human history, the hard part was making things. If you wanted to write a book, build a company, compose music, design a product, or create a new institution, you needed access to rare means of production. You needed training, capital, distribution, tools, collaborators, and time. The world was organized around the scarcity of execution.
Artificial intelligence changes that balance.
Not perfectly. Not magically. Not without friction. But directionally, the shift is clear: the ability to produce is becoming cheaper, faster, and more widely available. A single person can now generate code, images, strategy, music, research summaries, legal drafts, marketing plans, and business models at a speed that would have looked absurd only a few years ago.
This is usually described as democratization.
That is true, but incomplete.
AI does not only democratize creation. It also floods the world with output. And when output becomes abundant, the bottleneck moves somewhere else.
The bottleneck becomes taste.
Not taste as luxury. Not taste as personal preference. Not taste as knowing which font looks nice or which sentence sounds clever.
Taste in the deeper sense: the ability to feel what is true, coherent, beautiful, necessary, alive, and worth bringing into the world.
Taste is how you know which idea deserves more force. Taste is how you know when an answer is technically correct but spiritually empty. Taste is how you know when something is impressive but not important. Taste is how you know when abundance has become noise.
AI makes intelligence more available. It does not automatically make people wiser.
That is the gap.
Execution is no longer enough
Modern professional identity was built around effort. We respected people who could produce: the writer who filled pages, the analyst who built decks, the developer who shipped code, the consultant who generated frameworks, the manager who stayed busy.
Visible effort became a proxy for value.
But in an agentic world, effort becomes harder to see and less useful as proof. A person with good tools can now produce more visible output in an afternoon than an entire team used to produce in a week. The old question — “How much did you make?” — becomes less revealing.
The better question becomes: “What did you choose?”
What did you ask for? What did you reject? What did you refine? What did you recognize as alive? What did you refuse to publish, even though you could?
This is uncomfortable because execution has always been easier to measure than discernment. We can count pages, commits, posts, meetings, reports, campaigns, prototypes, and slides. We struggle to measure whether something should exist at all.
But that is exactly where human value is moving.
The person who merely generates more will not stand out for long. The person who can select, shape, and direct abundance will.
The world will not drown in lack of content
The fear that AI will make everything mediocre is partly right, but not because the machines are mediocre. The deeper danger is that human beings will outsource judgment before they have developed judgment.
A mediocre prompt can produce a polished artifact. A confused strategy can produce a convincing plan. A shallow worldview can produce endless content. A weak question can produce a fluent answer.
This is the new danger: not bad output, but plausible output.
The internet already taught us what happens when distribution becomes cheap. We did not get a world where the best ideas automatically won. We got a world where attention could be captured, optimized, gamed, fragmented, and sold.
AI adds a second layer. Now production itself becomes cheap too.
So the problem is no longer only attention. It is discernment.
Can you tell the difference between signal and simulation? Can you detect depth beneath fluency? Can you recognize when an argument has a soul and when it is only wearing the clothes of intelligence? Can you feel when something is coherent with your life, not just with the market?
These questions will matter more than prompt tricks.
Taste is compressed philosophy
People often talk about taste as if it is decorative. In reality, taste is compressed philosophy.
Your taste reveals what you believe reality is for.
If you consistently choose speed over depth, that is a philosophy. If you choose virality over truth, that is a philosophy. If you choose polish over honesty, that is a philosophy. If you choose optimization over aliveness, that is a philosophy.
Most people do not explicitly hold these philosophies. They reveal them through choices.
This is why taste cannot be reduced to aesthetics. Aesthetic decisions are moral decisions in disguise. Strategic decisions are metaphysical decisions in disguise. Product decisions are anthropological decisions in disguise: they imply a theory of the human being.
AI will expose this.
When everyone can generate, the difference between people will be less about raw capability and more about orientation. What do you point intelligence toward? What do you preserve? What do you amplify? What do you refuse?
A person with poor taste and powerful AI becomes a noise amplifier. A person with deep taste and powerful AI becomes an architect.
The new literacy is not only prompting
We are still early enough in the AI transition that many people confuse AI literacy with tool literacy. They learn which model to use, how to write prompts, how to automate workflows, how to make agents complete tasks.
All of that matters.
But it is only the first layer.
The deeper AI literacy is knowing how to remain human next to intelligence that can answer, generate, imitate, and optimize.
That requires a different kind of education.
You need enough technical understanding to know what the system can and cannot do. You need enough philosophical grounding to know what you are asking it to serve. You need enough aesthetic sensitivity to recognize quality. You need enough emotional honesty to notice when you are using AI to avoid the difficult part of thinking.
Because AI can make you faster at almost anything, including self-deception.
It can help you clarify your thoughts, or it can help you decorate confusion. It can help you build a company, or it can help you scale a bad idea. It can help you write with force, or it can help you publish sentences you never actually inhabited.
The tool does not settle the question. The human orientation does.
The builder’s test
I feel this most clearly when I move between roles.
As a writer, AI can give me twenty versions of an argument. But only I can know which one carries the pressure of lived truth.
As an agent builder, I can automate more of my digital world every week. But automation does not absolve me from direction. It makes direction more important.
As a father, I cannot simply teach my children to use powerful tools. I have to help them develop an inner standard strong enough not to be swallowed by those tools.
As a trader, I know that more information is not the same as better judgment. Markets punish people who confuse data with discernment. AI will do the same, but across every domain of life.
This is why taste is not a soft skill. It is the discipline that decides what power becomes.
The question is not whether we will have intelligent systems around us. We will. The question is whether we become more conscious beside them, or merely more productive.
Discernment becomes leverage
In a world of scarce execution, leverage belonged to people who could make things happen.
In a world of abundant execution, leverage belongs to people who can decide what should happen.
That sounds simple, but it is not. Discernment is demanding because it requires contact with reality. You cannot fake it for long. You have to expose your ideas to the world, notice what breaks, listen without becoming obedient, and refine your inner compass.
Taste grows through friction.
You read serious books. You build things. You ship. You fail. You watch what people actually do instead of what they say. You study beauty. You study markets. You study history. You notice your own envy, fear, laziness, and vanity. You develop a private standard that is not merely a reaction to the algorithm.
That private standard becomes more valuable as public output becomes more automated.
The future will still reward intelligence. But intelligence without taste will become cheap. It will be everywhere, embedded in every product, every workflow, every organization.
Taste is what tells intelligence where to go.
The real divide
The coming divide is not simply between people who use AI and people who do not.
That divide will matter for a while, but it is temporary. Eventually, AI use will become infrastructural. Like literacy, electricity, search, or mobile computing, it will fade into the background.
The deeper divide will be between people who use AI to avoid becoming more conscious and people who use AI to become more conscious.
One group will generate more. The other will see more.
One group will automate their existing patterns. The other will interrogate their patterns.
One group will use AI as a shortcut around taste. The other will use AI as a mirror for taste.
That is the real opportunity.
The point is not to compete with machines at production. The point is to become the kind of human who can stand beside powerful systems without surrendering judgment to them.
AI can give us more answers than ever.
The human task is to become worthy of better questions, better choices, and better standards.
The future will not belong to the busiest person in the room. It will not belong to the person with the most prompts, the most agents, or the most automated workflows.
It will belong to the person who can look at infinite possibility and say:
This. Not that. And here is why.
That is taste.
And in the age of artificial intelligence, taste is no longer optional decoration.
It is civilization-level leverage.
