The Theory of Constraints (TOC) is a management philosophy developed by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt in his 1984 book "The Goal." It is a systematic approach to identifying and managing bottlenecks or constraints that hinder the performance of a system, such as a manufacturing process, a project, or a supply chain. The main objective of TOC is to improve the overall efficiency and throughput of the system by focusing on these constraints.

TOC is comprised of a five-step process known as the "Five Focusing Steps":

  1. Identify the constraint: Determine the bottleneck or constraint that is limiting the system's performance. This could be a machine, a person, a policy, or any other factor that restricts output.
  2. Exploit the constraint: Make the most of the constraint's capacity by ensuring that it's used as efficiently as possible. This could involve reducing downtime, eliminating waste, or prioritizing work that directly impacts the constraint.
  3. Subordinate everything else to the constraint: Align all other processes and resources in the system to support the constraint. This means ensuring that non-constraint resources do not overproduce or create excess inventory, which can further burden the constraint.
  4. Elevate the constraint: If the constraint remains a limiting factor after steps 2 and 3, consider increasing its capacity. This could involve investing in additional resources, upgrading equipment, or hiring more personnel to address the constraint.
  5. Repeat the process: Once the constraint has been addressed, the system's performance should improve. However, another constraint may now become the limiting factor. Revisit the process to identify and address new constraints, continuously improving the system.

The Theory of Constraints can be applied to various industries and disciplines, including manufacturing, project management, and supply chain management. By focusing on the most critical constraints, organizations can achieve significant improvements in efficiency, throughput, and overall performance.
